A missing pilot was tragically found deceased this week when search teams located his submerged aircraft in Wolfe Lake, part of the Kawartha Lakes region in Ontario. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that the wreckage was recovered on Monday, and the plane itself was discovered underwater on Tuesday.
Authorities confirmed the pilot’s death and are now working on a plan to retrieve the plane. The pilot, identified as David, 73 years old, went missing after departing from Oshawa Executive Airport in a homemade aircraft. He was expected to return by 9:30 a.m. but never made it back, with his last known location near Balsam Lake close to Kirkfield.
Family members reported the pilot missing, prompting an extensive search effort led by the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, in collaboration with the OPP and various other agencies, including the Ministry of Natural Resources. The OPP expressed condolences to the pilot’s family and appreciated the public’s support during the search operation.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and has dispatched a team to the Minden Hills area to examine the accident involving the privately registered small plane. The pilot was described as an experienced aviator who frequently flew in the region south of Kawartha Lakes and north of Lake Scugog.
