“ABTA Addresses Concerns Over Fuel Shortages for UK Travelers”

Date:

A British travel industry trade association has released a statement addressing concerns about potential fuel shortages and flight cancellations ahead of the upcoming May half-term holiday. With families preparing for vacations during this peak travel period, uncertainties have arisen due to reports of jet fuel supply issues. While some airlines have provided assurances to their customers, others have remained quiet about the situation.

ABTA, representing over 3,500 travel agents and tour operators in the UK, has reassured travelers planning trips for the school holidays and the months ahead. Mark Tanzer, ABTA’s chief executive, emphasized that flights are operating normally and holidays are proceeding as scheduled. Both the government and airlines have affirmed the stability of fuel supply, minimizing the likelihood of disruptions. Reports of global flight cancellations represent less than one percent of total flights, offering further reassurance.

ABTA has created a dedicated page on jet fuel prices and availability to keep travelers informed. In the rare instance of a flight being canceled, protections are in place to safeguard the financial interests of UK travelers, ensuring reimbursement for flight costs and full package holiday coverage. Additionally, ABTA recommends obtaining travel insurance for added security.

Several airlines have also issued statements to alleviate concerns among their booked customers. Garry Wilson, CEO of easyJet holidays, affirmed that their operations are unaffected, guaranteeing smooth holiday experiences without unexpected expenses. Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, expressed confidence in the diminishing risk of supply disruptions, citing stable fuel supply forecasts until the end of June. However, he highlighted potential vulnerability for Britain in the event of a fuel crisis due to its substantial oil imports from Kuwait.
