“AI-Powered Robot Arm Revolutionizes Lung Cancer Biopsies”

An innovative robot arm powered by artificial intelligence has been created to conduct more extensive biopsies for improved lung cancer diagnoses.

Researchers have designed a robotic catheter, a slender tube inserted through the patient’s throat, to extract precise biopsies directly from tiny suspicious nodules as small as 6mm. These nodules are often deeply hidden and were previously unreachable. The NHS initiative utilizes AI technology to analyze lung scans and pinpoint potential cancerous nodules.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who underwent robotic surgery for kidney cancer at the age of 38 in 2021, mentioned that this pilot program will enable earlier cancer detection, replacing lengthy invasive procedures with a single targeted biopsy. This initiative aligns with the NHS’s strategy to expand lung cancer screening, aiming to invite all eligible individuals for their initial screening by 2030.

Streeting stated, “My personal experience with robotic technology during my kidney cancer treatment highlighted the life-saving potential of the NHS. Lung cancer is a significant threat in the UK, and this pilot project will enhance early detection, streamlining the diagnostic process for anxious patients.”

Lung cancer ranks as the third most prevalent cancer in the UK, leading to over 49,000 new cases and approximately 33,000 deaths annually. Targeted lung cancer screening trials commenced in 2019, with national implementation in 2023. The screening program targets individuals aged 55 to 74 with a history of smoking.

Since 2019, more than 1.5 million individuals have undergone screening, as reported by NHS England. The program’s expansion aims to invite an additional 1.4 million individuals next year alone. Officials predict that by 2035, screening could identify up to 50,000 cancers, with at least 23,000 detected at an early stage.

Professor Peter Johnson, NHS England’s national clinical director for cancer, emphasized the stress associated with waiting for cancer diagnoses and highlighted the success of the lung cancer screening program in early cancer detection. By integrating AI and robotics in this pioneering NHS pilot, clinicians can conduct faster, more accurate biopsies, offering a glimpse into the future of cancer detection.

Specialists at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust have already tested the robotic catheter on 300 patients, leading to the identification and treatment of lung cancer in 215 cases while ruling out the disease in 85 cases.

A new trial involving an additional 250 patients is planned, with intentions to extend the procedure to other London hospitals under King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

One individual, IT contractor David Lindsay, discovered his lung cancer through this technology after initially being referred to the hospital for a suspected blood clot. AI analysis of scans revealed a suspicious nodule in his lung, ultimately diagnosed as stage one lung cancer.

David expressed gratitude, stating that the blood clot incident led to timely detection and treatment of the cancer, avoiding potential progression to advanced stages. Following a successful biopsy and confirmation of cancer at Guy’s Hospital, the cancer was surgically removed.

As the Government prepares to unveil its National Cancer Plan to enhance cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, Michelle Mitchell, chief executive at Cancer Research UK, emphasized the importance of early lung cancer diagnosis in improving survival rates. She highlighted the significant potential of new technologies like robotic biopsies and called for swift validation to ensure their efficacy and rapid adoption for patient benefit.
