Andy Burnham: Champion of Justice and Integrity

Date:

On the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough, I first encountered Andy Burnham. At the time, I had just welcomed my second child and was observing the Anfield memorial service from the hospital. Initially, I was taken aback by a politician speaking at such a solemn occasion. However, as the crowd passionately chanted “Justice” during his speech, my perspective shifted. Witnessing the sincerity in Andy’s eyes transformed my initial skepticism into empathy. Over time, as the Hillsborough Independent Panel emerged and later concluded its work, my admiration for Andy grew, eventually leading to a friendship between us.

Andy possesses numerous admirable qualities, such as kindness, humility, understanding, approachability, loyalty, and empathy. However, his remarkable calmness stands out the most. When he invited me to participate in the launch of the “Hillsborough Law Now” initiative, I readily accepted. Throughout the negotiations for the Public Office Accountability Bill, during moments of uncertainty and anxiety, Andy consistently offered support and reassurance, maintaining unwavering optimism in our shared goals.

Hillsborough Law Now comprises a diverse group of activists advocating for various causes, each representing individuals deeply affected by injustices. Andy’s driving force stems from witnessing the distress and harm caused by such injustices, fueling his genuine commitment to seeking justice. His transparency in dealing with matters beyond his control, coupled with his honesty and willingness to explain limitations, further exemplify his integrity.

Attending Keir Starmer’s final speech on the Public Office Accountability Bill in the House of Commons, I couldn’t help but feel emotional. Spotting Andy among the MPs, his familiar smile evoked tears of pride. Witnessing Andy deliver a speech on the Bill, marking a significant milestone in our journey, ranks among the proudest moments of my life. As Andy navigates his newfound role as Prime Minister, his composed demeanor remains unwavering, despite his playful banter as a passionate Everton supporter.

Watching Andy’s ascension to the leadership of the Labour Party on television was a heartening experience. In a lighthearted gesture, I playfully updated his contact name in my phone to reflect his elevated status. Beyond the humor, I harbor genuine excitement for the political future under Andy’s leadership, wishing him and his family success in this new chapter. I am confident that Andy will continue to uphold his values and make significant contributions to the Labour Party and our nation, as he has consistently done.
