An Anglican bishop who escaped Iran during the revolution has expressed views that the Iranian regime is on the brink of collapse. The Rt Rev Guli Francis-Dehqani warned against underestimating the regime’s resilience and determination to hold on to power.
Speaking to the Press Association, Bishop Francis-Dehqani, a member of the House of Lords, shared her concerns about the uncertain future in Iran and her inability to contact anyone in the country. Born in Iran in 1966, she recounted the harrowing experiences her family faced during the revolution, including her father’s detention and an attempt on his life.
Reflecting on the current situation in Iran, the bishop remarked that the regime appears to be in its final throes, although the duration of this phase remains uncertain. She highlighted the regime’s focus on survival, characterized by ruthless crackdowns on dissent.
Bishop Francis-Dehqani supported the UK’s decision not to participate in the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law. She expressed concerns about the potential for Iran to descend into civil war, cautioning against the lack of a credible opposition to lead the country forward.
The bishop stressed the need for any political change in Iran to originate from within the country itself, urging Western nations to support dissident groups while allowing Iranians to shape their own future. She acknowledged the challenges of establishing democracy in Iran and the risks of violent conflict if the regime collapses.
Amidst reports of unrest in Iran, Bishop Francis-Dehqani received distressing messages about escalating violence and fears of widespread bloodshed. She lamented the lack of communication with Iran and the anguish faced by those with close ties to the country.
