In Fort Smith, N.W.T., the individual responsible for what authorities termed a “mass shooting” has been apprehended following the incident. The arrest of the suspect took place smoothly at approximately 4:30 a.m. MT on Sunday. Further inquiries are underway, with charges pending. Two other individuals of interest were already in custody from the previous day.
Mayor Dana Fergusson expressed a sense of relief at the development, stating that the community benefits from removing such individuals. Fergusson, who also owns the bar where the shooting occurred, witnessed the altercation unfold during the closing of the Fireweed Festival’s opening event. The incident outside Dirty O’Fergies resulted in gunshots and injuries to three people, prompting a lockdown lasting over 13 hours.
While the victims’ identities and injury specifics are yet to be disclosed, Fergusson confirmed they were evacuated for medical treatment. The increased police presence, with resources from Yellowknife and Yukon aiding the search, successfully led to the suspect’s apprehension.
Following the lockdown’s conclusion, community members rallied to support each other, showcasing the town’s unity. The Fireweed Festival, postponed during the lockdown, resumed with the message of resilience and solidarity. Festival activities recommenced, emphasizing support for impacted vendors and artists.
As events unfolded on Sunday, attendees were urged to back the festival participants affected by recent events. Fergusson highlighted the stark contrast between the community’s silent Saturday and the lively atmosphere at Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park on Sunday. Authorities have called for anyone present during the initial altercation to come forward and speak with investigators at the Fort Smith RCMP detachment.
