“Arson at London Synagogue Sparks Counter Terror Probe”

Date:

A fire broke out at an old synagogue in London early this morning, prompting counter terror police to launch an investigation. The incident occurred at Nelson Street in Whitechapel, East London. According to the Jewish security charity Shomrim, fire crews responded to the scene in the early hours of Tuesday.

The authorities are looking into this event in connection with several other recent attacks on Jewish establishments in London since late March. The Metropolitan Police were notified by the London Fire Brigade just before 5:15 am and discovered minor damage to gates and a lock at the building’s entrance. CCTV footage revealed that the fire was intentionally started a few minutes before the authorities arrived.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Counter Terrorism Policing London is investigating the arson incident at the former synagogue. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke emphasized the seriousness of the situation and assured close collaboration with the counter terrorism unit to support the inquiry. Although the targeted building has not functioned as a synagogue for some time, the incident is concerning for the Jewish community. Increased police presence can be expected in the area as investigations progress.

Commander Helen Flanagan, the head of CTP London, stated that this incident follows a series of arsons targeting Jewish residents in the northwestern part of the city. Detectives are working swiftly to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators. They urge anyone with relevant information or CCTV footage to come forward to assist in the investigation.

With the threat level elevated to severe, authorities are advising everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Individuals can contribute to community safety by reporting any concerning behavior to the police. Anyone with information regarding the recent arson is urged to contact the authorities quoting reference CAD 1000/5MAY.

The Metropolitan Police has intensified its community operations following the arson attack in Golders Green in March. Additional officer shifts have been deployed to safeguard the public and reassure affected communities. This includes armed police patrols and the deployment of officers trained to detect individuals planning criminal activities.
