The spouse of a woman who disappeared while on a vacation in the Bahamas has been taken into custody.
Lynette Hooker, aged 55, was declared missing after she went overboard during a boating excursion in the popular holiday destination. According to officials, the American woman was on an 8-foot motorboat journey from Hope Town to Elbow Cay. Her husband, Brian Hooker, informed authorities that she fell into the water along with the boat keys, causing the engine to shut down.
Law enforcement on the Caribbean island revealed that the 59-year-old man, whose identity was not disclosed, was apprehended in Abaco and is currently undergoing interrogation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The surprising development occurred after the couple’s daughter demanded a thorough probe into her mother’s demise, citing “previous concerns” that had been brought to her attention. A spokesperson from the Coast Guard disclosed that a criminal investigation has been initiated in the matter.
Authorities did not disclose additional information, including whether charges have been filed against the husband. They mentioned that the husband paddled back to shore after his wife fell overboard and promptly reported her disappearance early on Sunday.
Bahamian police stated, “Strong currents subsequently carried her away, and he lost sight of her.” Lynette Hooker’s mother, Darlene Hamlett, expressed relief upon hearing about the arrest but opted not to provide further comments, stating her intent to seek additional details.
Earlier on the same day, Hamlett expressed her desire to hear from Brian Hooker regarding the events surrounding her daughter’s incident while on vacation. She remarked, “I’m eager to hear his account, as I haven’t had any communication from him in nearly two days.”
“Our family has always been around water, and Lynette has been closely connected to lakes, boats, sailing, and swimming throughout her life. It would be a miracle if she is found, but I still hold onto hope,” Hamlett added. Lynette and Brian had been married for over 20 years and resided in Onsted, Michigan.
Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, in conversation with NBC News, expressed skepticism about the idea of her mother accidentally falling off the boat, given her sailing expertise. Aylesworth also mentioned the inconsistent nature of her parents’ relationship and their history of discord, particularly when alcohol was involved. Despite her doubts about her mother’s survival skills in the water, she remained hopeful for closure.
On Wednesday morning, Brian Hooker took to Facebook to express his sorrow over the tragic boating incident in challenging sea conditions that led to Lynette falling off their small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. He stated, “Despite our desperate efforts to locate her, the winds and currents pushed us apart. Our primary focus remains on finding her.” Bahamian authorities confirmed that search operations and investigative procedures are ongoing.
