Base Jumper from Madonna’s Super Bowl Show Dies

Date:

A base jumper known for his daring stunts, including a performance alongside Madonna at the Super Bowl, tragically lost his life in a recent accident in the United States, authorities confirmed. Andy Lewis, 39, was one of two individuals who perished in a base jumping incident in a Utah Canyon over the weekend. Base jumping involves parachuting from high structures like buildings, bridges, or cliffs into deep canyons.

Andy Lewis was highly regarded in the base jumping community for his fearless exploits, often venturing into challenging spaces and delaying his parachute deployment longer than others would. According to John McEvoy, a base jumping instructor who had jumped with Lewis, he possessed exceptional athleticism and skill honed through years of practice but was also willing to take substantial risks.

Lewis, who had a significant following in base jumping circles, notably appeared in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, performing tricks on a narrow line while the singer sang in the background. The fatal accident occurred during a base jumping attempt at Mineral Bottom, a remote desert area near the Utah-Colorado border, where Lewis and another individual, a 50-year-old man, lost their lives.

While official statistics on base jumping fatalities are unavailable, data from baseaddict.com indicates 540 deaths worldwide since 1981, with 30 reported in the previous year alone. A study published in 2007 focusing on base jumping in Norway highlighted the significantly higher risks of injury or death compared to skydiving.

Andy Lewis acknowledged the inherent dangers of base jumping, expressing his awareness of the risks involved in the sport. He owned Base Jump Moab, a business offering tandem jumps to inexperienced customers, where a guide wearing the parachute accompanies the jumper. Lewis, a skilled slackliner, had achieved various feats in the sport, winning world championships and setting Guinness World Records for his performances.

The tragic loss of Andy Lewis serves as a stark reminder of the perils associated with extreme sports like base jumping, where enthusiasts often push the boundaries of safety in pursuit of adrenaline-fueled thrills.
