Nestled along the River Waveney in Suffolk is a charming market town that has earned accolades as one of the top places to reside. Beccles, with its historical allure dating back to Elizabethan times, boasts a picturesque setting perfect for a leisurely visit. The town features a blend of architectural wonders, such as a Gothic church, Georgian townhouses, and quaint half-timbered structures, creating a delightful ambiance for a leisurely walk. Its town center offers a variety of unique shops, including the charming Books & Crannies bookstore.
Recognized in various rankings as a desirable residential location, Beccles is a popular destination in the East of England, known for its affordability amidst a competitive property market. With homes priced around £200k, well below the national average, the town offers an attractive option for homebuyers.
During a visit to Beccles, my family lodged at the Hippersons Boatyard, situated on the serene riverbanks, providing accommodations ranging from glamping options to floating homes and moorings. Our weekend retreat was in the Wild Cat Island, a floating pod showcased on Channel 4’s My Floating Home, offering surprising spaciousness with two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a charming terrace overlooking the river.
Exploring the River Waveney, we embarked on a day trip aboard a rented boat, navigating the tranquil waters with ease. Local café Relish supplied us with a delectable picnic basket filled with freshly baked treats, allowing us to savor the scenic journey, passing by wildlife and enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the river.
To conclude our day, we dined at Oak Fired at the Royal Oak, a pub transformed into an inviting pizza restaurant known for its authentic Neapolitan pizzas. The cozy atmosphere, coupled with delicious pizzas, made for a memorable dining experience.
As night fell, we strolled back to our accommodation, relishing the starlit sky and the gentle sway of the river before retiring for the night.
