“Bleak Future for British Pottery Industry Amid Government Inaction”

Date:

In July of the previous year, a visit to Dunoon, a renowned cup manufacturer in Walton near Stoke-On-Trent, was part of an insightful excursion with GMB members from the UK’s ceramics sector. Sharon Yates, a dedicated activist deeply ingrained in the pottery industry, showcased the rich heritage of the region, known fondly as ‘the Pots’, where generations of families have toiled to create pottery, including Sharon, her daughter, and granddaughter.

The ceramics industry in Britain, particularly the potteries, plays a significant role, contributing approximately £2 billion to the national economy and supporting 22,000 jobs. Stoke-On-Trent, regarded as the birthplace of modern industrial ceramics, has influenced ceramic production worldwide.

Despite its historical significance and economic impact, the British pottery industry faces challenges. Several prominent companies, such as Wedgewood and Denby, have recently grappled with job cuts, plant closures, and financial difficulties. The primary issue stems from the high production costs attributed to the UK’s anti-gas stance.

This predicament is uniquely British, jeopardizing an industry that holds immense potential and cultural value. The current government’s reluctance to address the industry’s needs is concerning, contrasting with its swift actions to safeguard jobs in other sectors like steel. The Labour party, now in governance, is urged to intervene and support the pottery sector to prevent long-lasting repercussions on the country’s economy and workforce.

Proposals like the Industry Supercharger scheme offer a viable solution to alleviate energy costs for energy-intensive industries like ceramics. However, the government’s hesitance to extend this support to the ceramics sector raises questions about its commitment to preserving vital industries and safeguarding the livelihoods of thousands of workers.

The government’s inaction risks the collapse of an industry integral to many working-class families, potentially leading to social and economic upheaval. Urgent intervention is needed to prevent a catastrophic decline that could shape the future political landscape and exacerbate existing societal challenges.
