Botanist Douglas Soltis recently revealed in an interview that scientists have confirmed Charles Darwin’s century-old suspicion about a seemingly harmless flowering plant being a carnivorous predator. Soltis, along with other researchers, published a study in the journal Nature Communications, unveiling Saxifraga candelabrum as a bug-eating plant found in southwestern China.
The plant, covered in tiny sticky hairs that attract insects, was a subject of Darwin’s curiosity back in 1875. However, due to the lack of technology at the time, Darwin couldn’t prove these plants’ carnivorous nature. In modern laboratories, researchers like Soltis can now demonstrate how these plants digest trapped insects for nutrients.
The study conducted by Soltis and his team involved feeding fruit flies enriched with nitrogen to verify the plant’s insect-eating behavior. Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient for these plants, especially in nutrient-poor environments like mountain crevices where they thrive.
While analyzing Saxifraga candelabrum’s predatory strategy, researchers speculate that more carnivorous plants may exist within the Saxifraga genus and beyond. This discovery aligns with previous findings in British Columbia’s Cypress Provincial Park, where a plant was observed using similar trapping mechanisms.
With over 630 known carnivorous plant species globally, including the infamous Venus flytraps and pitcher plants, the botanical world continues to unveil intriguing mechanisms for capturing prey. The evolution of these plants’ predatory habits, as highlighted in Soltis’s research, sheds light on the fascinating ways in which plants adapt to survive in diverse ecosystems.
