A 13-year-old boy displayed incredible bravery by swimming for four hours in shark-infested waters to rescue his mum and siblings after they were swept out to sea.
Austin Appelbee embarked on a perilous journey, covering 2.5 miles to reach the shore and seek help for his mother Joanne, 47, brother Beau, 12, and sister Grace, 8, who were caught in the ocean current. Initially using an inflatable kayak that began taking on water, Austin abandoned it and removed his life jacket to facilitate his swimming.
Despite the challenging conditions and the known presence of sharks in the area, Austin managed to stay focused on positive thoughts as he battled the rough seas until he reached the shore and raised the alarm at 6 pm. The family, on vacation from Perth, found themselves in distress while using kayaks and paddle boards from their hotel, eventually drifting nine miles from their starting point.
A search helicopter located Joanne and the two children clinging to a paddleboard at 8:30 pm after spending up to 10 hours in the water. The 13-year-old’s actions were commended by Police Inspector James Bradley, emphasizing his determination and courage in saving his family members.
Joanne Appelbee expressed her difficult decision to send her eldest child for help while staying with the other children, praising Austin’s bravery and determination. The family remained positive during the ordeal, singing and joking to keep their spirits up until sunset, when the situation became more serious.
Despite the challenging circumstances, all family members were safely rescued and medically assessed, with none requiring hospitalization. The remarkable courage and quick thinking of the 13-year-old boy played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of his loved ones.
