Inquiries into the deaths of five infants allegedly killed by Lucy Letby have commenced today.
The investigations will delve into the circumstances surrounding the passing of Baby C, Baby E, Baby I, Baby O, and Baby P. These tragic events occurred at the Countess of Chester Hospital during Letby’s tenure as a nurse in the neonatal unit in 2015 and 2016.
The initiation of these inquests follows the release of a recent documentary by Netflix containing previously unseen police footage.
One of the infants, Baby O, passed away at the hospital after two days. Born at 33 weeks and two days on June 21, 2016, Baby O initially showed no complications. However, his health suddenly deteriorated on June 23 with significant symptoms, leading to frantic efforts to save his life, ultimately resulting in his unfortunate demise.
Regarding Baby I, who died at the hospital on October 23, 2015, the court learned that the infant, born at 27 weeks with existing medical conditions, experienced a series of health crises before succumbing to a cardiorespiratory arrest despite medical interventions.
The court proceedings revealed that an investigation was launched for each case due to suspicions of unnatural deaths, leading to the conviction of Lucy Letby for the murder of these infants.
Ms. Devonish confirmed that full inquests have been adjourned until a later date, with a provisional inquest set for September this year.
Further inquests are scheduled for the remaining infants, bringing to light the tragic events that unfolded at the hospital during Letby’s employment. Despite Letby’s conviction and ongoing legal processes, questions and concerns persist within the community regarding the circumstances surrounding these heartbreaking incidents.
