A daring thief was caught on camera filling his bags with beverages from a Greggs store before returning to clear out shelves. Adam Gosling, 39, stole nearly £2,000 worth of food from the bakery in Greenford, west London, in 38 incidents over a period from December to February. Despite his actions, Gosling avoided jail time following his court appearance at Uxbridge Magistrates Court today.
Video footage from the Metropolitan Police captured Gosling’s arrest as officers swiftly apprehended him and placed him in their vehicle. The footage also showed multiple instances of Gosling stealing items from the store shelves and nonchalantly walking out as if nothing had happened.
Gosling’s thefts ranged from £12.30 to £100 per visit, with repeated hits on the same store in a single day. It is estimated that over six weeks, Gosling stole goods valued at £1,817.50.
Store staff noticed the missing items and reported the thefts to the police. The Metropolitan Police’s Greenford Broadway safer neighbourhood team highlighted Gosling, known as “Hamster” to staff, as the most prolific thief.
The court heard that Gosling, who is homeless, pleaded guilty to 38 counts of shoplifting. He was handed a four-month suspended sentence for one year by Magistrates Bench Chairwoman Judy Gregg.
Police Community Support Officer James Tupman commended the collaboration with Greggs staff for their proactive approach in documenting offenses and assisting in the investigation. The police effort to apprehend Gosling and implement preventive measures to deter future offenses was recognized.
Superintendent Sean Lynch emphasized the commitment to combat issues affecting businesses and communities, such as shoplifting. He noted a decrease in theft offenses in Ealing and across the Metropolitan Police area.
Gosling expressed remorse in an interview with The Mirror, vowing never to repeat his actions and offering an apology to Greggs. He pledged to prevent others he knows from committing similar crimes, declaring his determination to turn over a new leaf and avoid further troubles with the bakery.
