A British visitor was instructed to remain at home upon returning from a £6,000 disastrous TUI vacation in Jamaica with a bacterial infection. Tony Wallace, aged 59, disclosed that he contracted salmonella during his 38th wedding anniversary trip. Subsequently, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advised him to cease work and recuperate at home.
The source of the infection, as claimed by Mr. Wallace, was the substandard food served at TUI’s all-inclusive resort, Sunset at the Palms, located in Nigrin, Jamaica. Despite the resort’s luxurious amenities such as treetop rooms and tropical gardens, the quality of food was described as appalling, with meals being reheated from the previous night and served in an unsatisfactory manner. Mr. Wallace even discovered a deceased cockroach inside his accommodation.
This incident follows the tragic deaths of four British individuals while on TUI trips in Cape Verde, leading to their families seeking justice. Among thousands of visitors reporting severe gastric issues, including diarrhea, during their vacations, six Britons have lost their lives in the nation since 2023. Consequently, affected families are pursuing compensation from TUI, whom they had booked their holidays with, prompting the tourism company to break its silence on the matter.
Mr. Wallace, hailing from Portsmouth, traveled to Jamaica with his wife Alison, aged 57, to commemorate their anniversary. Despite years of saving for this special holiday, their experience turned nightmarish when Mr. Wallace fell seriously ill on July 1, experiencing debilitating symptoms that marred the entire trip.
Throughout their stay, the couple faced challenges as there were no medical facilities on-site at the resort. Despite seeking help, Mr. Wallace only received basic advice from a fellow guest who happened to be a nurse. The lack of assistance and communication from TUI representatives added to their distress.
Upon returning home, Mr. Wallace sought immediate medical attention, revealing that he had contracted salmonella from dining at the hotel restaurant. The severity of the infection led to his suspension from work and a prolonged recovery period. Expressing his disappointment with TUI’s response, he highlighted the company’s refusal to acknowledge their responsibility in the matter.
Despite TUI’s claims that the infection could have originated elsewhere, Mr. Wallace emphasized the evidence provided by UKHSA pinpointing the exact onset of the infection during their stay at the resort. Frustrated with TUI’s handling of the situation, he declared his decision to sever ties with the company after years of holidaying with them.
