“Sikh Activist Warned of Threat, Questions Government”

Date:

Another Sikh Canadian activist has received a “duty to warn” communication, raising doubts about the Carney government’s claims of addressing Indian government interference and repression. Inderjeet Singh Gosal disclosed receiving the letter on August 14 after being contacted by the RCMP in Caledon, Ontario. These letters are issued when police have credible information of a threat to a citizen’s life, without specifying the nature of the threat.

Gosal stated that the RCMP reiterated an offer to enroll him in a witness protection program, which he declined, expressing his dedication to advocating for the Khalistan referendum. The referendum seeks an independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region, causing tensions with the Indian government. Gosal is now leading the Canadian campaign following the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.

These warnings from Canadian police have increased since the government’s efforts to mend relations with India. Despite seeking to move past the conflict, duty to warn letters continue to be issued, indicating ongoing threats. The UN has also questioned Canada’s handling of threats to Sikh Canadians, particularly in the case of activist Moninder Singh. Gosal commended the RCMP for informing him of the threats but criticized the government’s approach.

Gosal remains steadfast in his activism, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes and continuing his efforts despite the risks. India denies involvement in violent acts in Canada, including the Nijjar assassination. Gosal affirmed his commitment to the cause and organizing the upcoming referendum, despite the challenges faced.
