“British Tourists Die in Tragic Hotel Balcony Collapse”

Date:

Two British individuals tragically lost their lives when the railing of their hotel balcony collapsed in Lanzarote, as revealed in an inquest. The deceased, identified as Darren Silcox, aged 56, and Nicholas Thomas, aged 54, both hailing from Cwmbran, Wales, fell from a balcony at a flat in the Canary Islands.

The incident occurred in October 2025 at the Galeon Playa Apartments, where shop owner Darren and his friend Nicholas fell from the balcony during the early hours of the morning after a night out. They fell into the atrium stairwell in Costa Teguise at 1:30 am. Darren succumbed to his injuries two hours after the fall, while Nicholas was transported back to the UK for treatment. Unfortunately, Nicholas passed away nearly 10 months later on July 10 at the University Hospital in Llandough.

A probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident is underway by Spain’s Civil Guard, as reported by Wales Online. Investigators are examining whether inadequate maintenance or safety measures played a role in the tragic incident.

Following the fall, emergency services rushed to the holiday apartments around 1:30 am, confirming Darren’s demise at the scene due to his fall injuries. Gwent coroner Rose Farmer, during an inquest into Mr. Thomas’ passing, mentioned that he fell approximately between 15 to 22 feet after a wooden bannister gave way. He received initial treatment at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote before being airlifted to the UK in late November.

A previous inquest into Mr. Silcox’s death disclosed that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations. The proceedings have been postponed until April 14 next year for a joint inquest.
