Brits Detained in UAE for Filming Iranian Missiles

Date:

Around 70 British citizens have reportedly been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for capturing images and videos of Iranian missiles in flight. While previously a popular destination for Brits, many now face the prospect of up to a decade in prison following their detention amidst Iran’s actions against neighboring countries. The individuals taken into custody include expatriates, tourists, and airline crew members who were documenting drone and missile attacks in the region.

The United Arab Emirates enforces strict laws prohibiting the dissemination of content that could disrupt public security, leading to the silence of tourists and foreign nationals in the Gulf nation. Despite its reputation as a luxurious destination, Dubai’s legal system has garnered attention for its severity, especially following Iran’s military activities in the region. Several advocacy groups have raised concerns about the detention of British and other foreign nationals for sharing photos or videos of drone strikes on buildings and airports.

Any transmission of such images is considered illegal, with penalties including lengthy prison sentences or substantial fines. Campaign group Dubai Watch has disclosed that they are representing eight detained British citizens, while reports suggest that around 35 Brits have been apprehended in Dubai and a similar number in Abu Dhabi. According to Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained In Dubai, the detained individuals are facing harsh conditions, including overcrowding, lack of medication, and pressure to confess without legal representation. Stirling emphasized the urgent need for strong diplomatic intervention to ensure their well-being and secure their release, highlighting that these individuals are not criminals but ordinary visitors, workers, or residents who did not act with malicious intent.

The situation escalated further when a 60-year-old man from London was arrested for allegedly violating filming laws by capturing footage of Iranian missiles over the city. Police reportedly found a video of the missiles on the man’s phone.
