Photographs reveal a section of a bungalow roof damaged by fire in a village in Leicestershire following a lightning strike.

Firefighters from Warwickshire and Leicestershire responded to the blaze at a residence in Witherley near Atherstone that erupted during an overnight storm.

The country experienced unusually high temperatures for May this week, leading to thunderstorms in various regions.

Residents were startled by loud thunderclaps during the night, and in Witherley, a bungalow was directly hit by a lightning bolt, creating a frightening ordeal.

A spokesperson from Nuneaton Fire Station reported that they were called to Orchard Close in Witherley at 3:45 am where they found the bungalow engulfed in flames, but fortunately, all occupants had safely evacuated.

Firefighters attempted to enter the bungalow but had to retreat due to the intense flames breaking through the roof, as per CoventryLive.

The spokesperson stated, “Early this morning at 3:45 AM, Nuneaton’s White Watch and Polesworth and Leicestershire Fire crews responded to a bungalow fire in Orchard Close, Witherley, following a direct lightning strike.

“The incident was initially reported with people inside. Upon arrival, it was confirmed that everyone had safely exited the buildings.

“Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus (BA) swiftly entered the structure with a ladder to reach the roof space and used a hose reel jet to combat the spreading fire. Due to the severity of the flames penetrating the roof, the crews had to withdraw.

“They promptly redirected their efforts to the neighboring property, preventing the fire from spreading. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service teams remain at the scene to monitor and extinguish any remaining hotspots.”

The spokesperson emphasized the importance of taking simple precautions in such situations, stating, “This incident underscores the critical nature of swift action during a fire outbreak.”

“To ensure a safe escape for you and your family, maintain clear escape routes – keep hallways and doors free of obstructions for quick exit in low visibility or smoke. Know the location of your keys – store door and window keys in an easily accessible spot close to an exit. Plan your evacuation route – ensure all household members are aware of the fastest way out.”
