My day began at 5am as we prepared for our family getaway, with my energetic five-year-old enthusiastically shouting ‘BUTLIN’S!!!!!!’ This moment instantly took me back to my own childhood excitement, reminiscent of when I used to do the same to my parents, whom I now owe an apology.
Butlin’s held a significant place in my childhood summers, with one of my fondest memories being winning a dance contest in pink wellies and receiving a small trophy from a charismatic red coat.
Anticipation ran high as I hyped up our four-day visit to Butlin’s Skegness for the resort’s 90th anniversary to my three-year-old and his sibling. The promise of roller coasters, ice cream treats, discos, and go-karting had our excitement levels soaring.
A budget-friendly weekend escape seemed like a perfect choice as we loaded the car with our kids, who had momentarily paused their enthusiastic ‘Butlin’s’ chants, and headed to the flagship resort.
For the uninitiated, a Butlin’s vacation is a tradition for many UK families, offering free fairground rides, amazing pools, spectacular shows, and vibrant discos, creating a sensory whirlwind for both children and adults.
As we entered the resort gates, I pondered how different my sons’ Butlin’s experience would be compared to mine from years ago.
The comparison revealed a mix of changes – gone were the old chalets and absent were the traditional donkey rides. Instead, modern upgrades like free WiFi, QR code drink orders, and self-serve beer taps were in place.
We opted for the all-inclusive drinks deal, a stay in the new Maple Lodges, and Early Access VIP seats for the shows, which proved invaluable, especially with young children.
Upon arrival, the enchanting fairground and iconic Skyline Pavilion immediately caught our attention. Though we initially headed to the wrong entrance, we were promptly directed to our lodge across the road.
Our stay at the Maple Lodge was a departure from the bustling chalet memories of my youth, where disco sounds echoed through the walls, making bedtime a challenge. The three-bedroom lodge, conveniently located near the main park, was clean, peaceful, and equipped with modern amenities like a dishwasher, which I tend to overlook on vacation. Both kids were thrilled with their rooms, striking a balance between proximity to the park and bedtime ease.
While the lodge featured a fully stocked kitchen, we opted for the Premium Dining package, essential for a classic Butlin’s experience. The food selection had expanded significantly since my earlier visits, offering family favorites like pasta, roasts, curries, and an ice cream station that delighted my children.
Impressive modern additions included live cooking stations for burgers and wraps, with Chef Ken crafting the most delectable omelette at breakfast. Opting for the all-inclusive drinks package even
