“UK Broadband Users Face Evening Slowdowns, Study Finds”

Date:

Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of facing online congestion when attempting to connect to the internet. This issue commonly arises in households during the evening when multiple users are engaging in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video calling friends.

Typically, download speeds remain fast and reliable during working hours when fewer individuals are online at home. However, as the evening approaches and more households go online after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, leading to a noticeable decrease in speeds.

Analogous to a motorway, broadband operates more slowly when there is high traffic, resulting in many households experiencing a significant performance decline between 7pm and 11pm.

A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most affected by slowdowns during peak times, with Wigan (WN1) topping the list. In this area, average download speeds drop from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening, representing a 55% decrease.

Additionally, other regions heavily impacted by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).

Contrastingly, some areas in the UK actually witness improved speeds during the evening. Newport ranked highest in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie explained, “Internet networks, like roads, can experience congestion causing broadband slowdowns in the evening.” The study, analyzing 144,509 broadband speed tests, identified locations where broadband performance fluctuates the most during peak times.

Regional differences across the UK were also highlighted in the report. Scotland displayed the most significant improvement in broadband performance during the evenings, while Wales and the East of England also demonstrated strong performance.

Conversely, the South West experienced a drop of around 15% in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Experts suggest methods for households to enhance their home connection, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstacles to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
