British authorities have confiscated a significant amount of money from a notorious criminal who ranked just below Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. James Joseph ‘Whitey’ Bulger, the head of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston, Massachusetts, led a violent organized crime syndicate that waged gang warfare across the United States for years.
In the late 1990s, Bulger relocated to California with his girlfriend to evade law enforcement after being warned by a former FBI contact. Despite being listed among the Ten Most Wanted fugitives by the FBI, it was later revealed that he had been acting as an informant for a large part of his criminal career.
After a 16-year manhunt, Bulger was apprehended in 2013 and subsequently convicted of multiple crimes, including 11 murders, racketeering, drug trafficking, firearm possession, money laundering, and extortion. He met his demise in prison in 2018 at the age of 89.
In 2024, three inmates involved in Bulger’s murder case struck plea agreements with prosecutors. Notably, Johnny Depp portrayed Bulger in the 2015 film “Black Mass,” and Jack Nicholson’s character in “The Departed” was loosely based on him.
Following his imprisonment, US courts ordered the forfeiture of over $25 million from Bulger’s accounts, with $19 million allocated to the families of his victims. The National Crime Agency later probed Bulger’s connections to UK bank accounts, discovering that he had established two accounts in the early 1990s – one under his name and the other under an alias.
In a recent development, the NCA executed a ‘freezing order’ leading to the transfer of £53,041 to US authorities for the compensation of victims’ families. Rob Burgess, the NCA’s Head of Investigations for Asset Denial, emphasized the collaborative effort between the NCA and international partners to ensure justice is served fully, returning the illicitly acquired funds to the US.
