The Canary Islands government has issued a warning about upcoming high temperatures across the archipelago, signaling a heatwave on the horizon. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, temperatures could soar to 37C or even higher, particularly in the inland regions of the southern parts of these islands.
Authorities advise residents to seek shelter in shaded areas and to avoid consuming alcohol during the extreme heat. The official pre-alert for maximum temperatures, issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies, will take effect at 11 am the following day.
In Gran Canaria, temperatures may surpass 34C, especially in inland areas and on the southern slopes that face south and west. Similarly, on Tenerife and La Gomera, temperatures may exceed 32C, notably in the midlands and summits, particularly on the south-facing slopes.
Residents of the Canary Islands are urged to adhere to the self-protection guidelines provided by the General Directorate of Emergencies. Anticipated temperatures on El Hierro and La Palma could reach 30C or higher, with the highest heat levels expected on the northeastern peaks of El Hierro and the western slopes of La Palma.
Meanwhile, in the UK, the Met Office has forecasted temperatures to rise to 33C over the Bank Holiday weekend as a heatwave sweeps across the country. Record-breaking temperatures are anticipated, surpassing the previous May record of 32.8C, with Monday expected to reach at least 33C.
