Chaos Erupts in Mexico City During World Cup Opener

Date:

Chaos erupted in Mexico City as Mexico faced off against South Africa in the opening match of the World Cup. Videos circulating on social media captured disturbances outside Gate 8 of Estadio Azteca, where protesters reportedly threw Molotov cocktails.

Residents voiced concerns that authorities prioritized the sporting event over pressing social issues in the country. More than 1,000 family members of missing individuals marched towards the stadium, holding candles and pictures of their loved ones who are unaccounted for.

Despite the violence, the match continued as worries about crowd safety at the venue arose. Simultaneously, emergency services rushed to Gate 1 before kick-off due to an elderly man’s tragic death from a suspected heart attack. Medical teams from the World Cup security unit arrived promptly, provided CPR, and stabilized the man before transporting him to the hospital. Regrettably, he later passed away.

The 2026 World Cup commenced with the Mexico vs. South Africa match at 8 pm local time, with the US, Mexico, and Canada co-hosting 48 teams over six weeks. The tournament will feature a record 104 matches in 16 stadiums during the 39-day event.

Leading up to the tournament, controversies emerged, including Iran’s threat to withdraw due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. The clashes outside the stadium during the evening raised questions about potential arrests or injuries, though details remain unclear.
