The meeting between the two leaders, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, marked a significant moment in Starmer’s three-day visit to China, the first by a British Prime Minister in eight years. President Xi acknowledged past challenges in the China-UK relationship, attributing positive contributions to previous Labour governments.
Xi Jinping expressed confidence that history would test and validate their ability to overcome differences and work towards common goals. Quoting a Chinese proverb, he emphasized the importance of taking a broad perspective, mutual respect, and unity in facing challenges. The President viewed the visit as auspicious, particularly with the approaching Chinese New Year.
