Calls have been made for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to give up one of his remaining titles following the controversy surrounding his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Members of the City of London Corporation have written to the former Duke, urging him to renounce the freedom of the city honor that he was granted in 2012. They highlighted that Andrew obtained this honor through inheritance, as his late father, Prince Phillip, was previously a freeman.
Despite the request, the corporation clarified that the honor was legally passed down to Andrew and cannot be revoked through any legal means.
The freedom of the city honor is a symbolic title that historically allowed holders to guide sheep across London Bridge.
In a statement released recently, a spokesperson stated that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was granted the freedom of the City of London in 2012 based on inheritance, a legally recognized right that cannot be altered. The spokesperson added that applications through inheritance are not subject to review or approval by elected members, and there is no established procedure to withdraw such an honor.
The corporation has decided to formally ask Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor to relinquish the freedom of the city honor. They will assess any response received in a future meeting to determine potential actions.
Notable recipients of this honor include Sir Lenny Henry, Cate Blanchett, Harry Kane, Frank Bruno, and all of Andrew’s siblings, including the King.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any misconduct related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Last year, King Charles removed all royal titles and honors from Andrew due to revelations about his ties to Epstein.
The freedom of the city tradition dates back to 1237 and was initially intended to support recipients in their trade activities. Typically, nominations for this honor are made by corporation councillors.
This development follows the recent revocation of Sarah Ferguson’s “Freedom of the City of York” honor in March, further highlighting the scrutiny faced by the former royal family members over their connections to Epstein.
If Andrew agrees to relinquish the London honor, it will mark another loss of title linked to his association with Epstein.
In February, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of public office misconduct and spent 11 hours in custody before being released pending investigation on his 66th birthday.
