“Coastguards Rally in Westminster Against Pay Cuts”

Date:

Coastguards assembled in Westminster today to demand the reinstatement of emergency call-out payments and expressed concerns about morale reaching a critical low.

Individuals who sacrifice their primary work responsibilities to engage in life-saving operations were previously entitled to receive £11 per hour for responding to emergencies.

However, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is set to discontinue these payments in September following a Court of Appeal ruling that categorized the activities as part of their regular work duties. They are now urging the MCA to halt its decision and engage in discussions with members amid worries that the pay reduction could harm morale and undermine the effectiveness of the service.

Ian Bugler, a 52-year-old coastguard from Dorset, voiced his support for the cause, highlighting his family’s longstanding involvement in coastguard services. He emphasized the current system that provides some compensation for the time and effort invested in these critical missions, which often require individuals to step away from their primary employment to assist those in need.

Bugler expressed concerns about the potential impact of the payment cut, predicting a significant decrease in response rates from coastguard rescue officers. Dr. Kelly Stockdale, another coastguard from Eyemouth who recently met with MPs, echoed these worries, emphasizing the close-knit coastal communities they serve and the potential loss of skilled personnel if the changes proceed.

Nicola Savage, National Officer for GMB, emphasized the dedication and sacrifice of coastguards across the UK and stressed the importance of compensating them for their time and expenses. She likened coastguards to other essential emergency services like firefighters and police officers, calling for the MCA to pause, engage in consultations, and address the concerns raised by the coastguard community.

The Mirror’s initiative to enhance water safety, particularly in response to recent drownings, has gained momentum, with public figures like Keir Starmer throwing their support behind the campaign. The government is urged to take swift action to prevent the tragic deaths of 33 children annually in open water incidents.

As efforts to improve water safety continue, The Mirror’s advocacy for change in response to recent water-related fatalities during the heatwave has garnered significant support from various stakeholders, emphasizing the urgent need for preventative measures.
