“Convicted Sex Offender Stabs Himself in Neck After Online Exposé”

Date:

A convicted sex offender attempted self-harm by stabbing himself in the neck after being exposed by an online group, leading him to swear off using computers in the future.

Stephen McLoughlin, 59, engaged in sending sexually explicit messages to what he thought were two underage girls named “Maddie and Summer,” aged 13 and 12, respectively. However, McLoughlin, from Kirkby, Merseyside, was unknowingly corresponding with a group named TFN (Travelled From Nottingham) for several months. A video circulated online showing McLoughlin stabbing himself outside a Merseyside Police station on August 26, 2022.

Following a trial at Bolton Crown Court in February, McLoughlin, who claimed his actions were a joke, was found guilty of multiple child sexual offenses. The judge emphasized McLoughlin’s willingness to engage in inappropriate conduct with a supposed child.

A disturbing video captured McLoughlin outside a police station, where he produced a knife and inflicted harm on himself. Despite being punched and collapsing, he continued to hold the knife while distressing scenes unfolded.

McLoughlin, a married butcher with no previous criminal record, engaged in inappropriate online conversations with individuals he believed to be young girls. The court revealed explicit messages and discussions about meeting up, highlighting the grooming tactics employed by McLoughlin.

Convicted after a six-day trial, McLoughlin faced charges related to grooming, attempting sexual activities with minors, and possessing a bladed article in public. His defense claimed his self-inflicted harm was not intended for others but as an escape for himself and his family.

The court heard about the toll the legal proceedings took on McLoughlin’s mental health and family. Despite struggling in prison, McLoughlin made efforts to utilize available educational and therapeutic resources. Sentenced to four years in prison, McLoughlin will serve around 40% of the term before being released on license. Additionally, he received an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
