The wife of a US death row convict has formed a friendship with the daughter of one of his victims. Tiana Krasniqi, 31, and McKayla Butler, whose father, Matthew Butler, was one of the men murdered by James Broadnax during a robbery, connected earlier this year. Krasniqi, a law school graduate, revealed that McKayla, 19, was against Broadnax’s execution as she believed in his innocence and had intended to meet him before his lethal injection last week.
Broadnax was found guilty of killing Matthew Butler and Stephen Swan in a recording studio parking lot in Garland, Dallas, in 2008. Despite initially confessing to the crime, Broadnax later claimed his confession was coerced due to being under the influence of PCP. His cousin, Demarius Cummings, who is serving a life sentence for the same incident, has since confessed to being the actual shooter.
Tiana, from Lewisham, South East London, shared that McKayla reached out to her, and despite legal restrictions on direct communication, they spoke for hours and developed a bond. Tiana expressed her admiration for McKayla’s resilience and upcoming wedding. She mentioned that McKayla was distressed upon learning about Cummings’ confession and the discrepancies in her family’s narrative of the events.
Broadnax’s legal team raised concerns about potential racial bias in the jury selection process and the use of his rap lyrics against him. Despite these challenges, Broadnax was executed after his final appeal was denied by the US Supreme Court. Tiana recounted the traumatic experience of witnessing her husband’s execution, emphasizing the emotional toll it has taken on her.
Tiana refuted claims of Broadnax’s peaceful passing, describing the distressing scene she witnessed during his lethal injection. She criticized media reports that portrayed his death as peaceful, highlighting the suffering he endured.
