The spouse of a death row rapper professed her love while witnessing her husband’s execution for murder, a man she had only interacted with through a glass barrier and never embraced.
Tiana Krasniqi, a 31-year-old British law school graduate, stood close to the chamber window as James Broadnax, aged 37, received a lethal injection at 6:47 pm in a Texas penitentiary. The couple tied the knot just two weeks prior in a brief 20-minute ceremony at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit after Tiana reached out to the inmate for legal study purposes.
Despite her efforts to save his life following his conviction for the 2008 shootings of two Christian music producers, Tiana witnessed Broadnax’s execution helplessly, leaning against the viewing window with outstretched arms, eventually needing assistance to leave the prison.
Before the execution, Broadnax’s legal team issued a statement expressing gratitude for the support received in fighting for justice in the case. Tiana, originally from Lewisham, London, connected with Broadnax as part of her legal studies, focusing on racial inequalities in US capital punishment while applying for a master’s degree in international human rights law at the University of Law in October 2024.
Initially contacting Broadnax for a dissertation supporting her master’s application, Tiana later admitted to developing romantic feelings for him within a few months. Despite Broadnax’s assertion that a relationship was not feasible due to his impending execution, Tiana highlighted his intelligence, eloquence, and respectfulness, emphasizing his normalcy aside from being on death row.
Their communication limited to interactions through a glass screen, Tiana found solace in possessing a few articles of clothing gifted by the 37-year-old, such as worn T-shirts that carried his scent, likening the experience to a military deployment scenario.
Reflecting on his proposal during a visitation, Tiana described the moment as unromantic yet sincere, with Broadnax confessing to his actions and asking for her hand. Broadnax faced accusations of fatally shooting and robbing Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler at a recording studio parking lot in Dallas, Garland, almost 18 years ago, though his cousin Demarius Cummings, serving a life sentence for the same crime, claimed responsibility for the killings in a prison video.
Cummings’ assertion, supported by forensic evidence indicating his DNA on the murder weapon and in a victim’s pocket rather than Broadnax’s, failed to prevent the execution as officials proceeded at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, maintaining Broadnax as the perpetrator based on his admission.
While Broadnax had initially claimed responsibility for the murders without remorse, later recanting under the influence of drugs and expressing regret for his role in the robbery, the case garnered support from rappers like Travis Scott, T.I., and Killer Mike, submitting briefs to the Supreme Court in favor of his appeal, which was ultimately declined.
Dismissing Cummings’ confession as dubious new evidence, Texas officials rejected any delays, supported by the victims’ families, notably Theresa Butler, mother of Matthew Butler, who denounced the cousin’s statement as a ploy by Broadnax’s defense team.
Relocating to Houston, Texas, to pursue legal actions against Broadnax’s execution, Tiana faced separation from her daughter in the UK throughout the process, acknowledging the unconventional nature of her relationship and the hardships it entailed.
Despite her persistent attempts, Broadnax received a lethal dose of pentobarbital after the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal, prompting a posthumous statement from Tiana and his legal advocates honoring Broadnax’s character and expressing condolences to the victims’ families for their loss and suffering.
