Dubai Drone Attack Survivors Detained for Sharing Photos

Date:

Three individuals who survived a terrifying drone assault on a luxurious high-rise building in Dubai have purportedly been detained for privately sharing photographs of the incident. These residents of the Creek Harbour area allegedly sent images to their family to assure them of their safety after the explosion, as per information from Detained in Dubai. Shocking video footage depicted a significant breach in the skyscraper with a fire erupting inside the residential block on Wednesday.

Following the attack, emergency services swiftly responded to the location, situated approximately 10 kilometers away from the international airport, to extinguish the late-night blaze. Subsequently, local authorities reportedly visited three survivors, requesting access to their phones.

Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, expressed concern over the situation, stating that criminalizing individuals for sharing their safety status with loved ones following a traumatic event like a drone strike could end up penalizing victims rather than safeguarding them. Stirling cautioned expatriates and tourists in the United Arab Emirates about the stringent cybercrime regulations in the country, emphasizing that even privately sharing photos related to sensitive incidents could lead to legal repercussions.

The incident coincides with a crackdown on individuals posting images of retaliatory strikes from Iran on Dubai. Tehran initiated a series of attacks on neighboring states in the Middle East in response to conflicts involving the US and Israel, resulting in the death of Iran’s supreme leader on February 28. Dubai has experienced multiple drone strikes, including some targeting the renowned international airport. A British tourist allegedly faces a potential two-year jail term for recording Iranian missiles flying over the region, according to Detained in Dubai.

Moreover, a 60-year-old British man from London was reportedly among 21 individuals accused of violating the UAE’s strict laws against documenting or sharing social media content related to conflicts. The man was arrested in Dubai and promptly deleted the recorded footage upon authorities’ request. Stirling highlighted the severity of the charges under UAE cybercrime laws, pointing out that even a single post could lead to multiple arrests and serious legal consequences for those involved.

Stirling urged caution during times of heightened tension, emphasizing the risks of lengthy prison sentences, arbitrary detention under national security laws, lack of access to embassy assistance, and potential human rights violations for individuals facing charges. It is crucial for residents to exercise extreme care in their online activities and communications to avoid legal entanglements in such circumstances.
