“EcoJet Airlines Abandons All-Electric Venture”

Date:

Plans for the world’s first all-electric airline have been abandoned as EcoJet Airlines appoints liquidators after attempting to raise £20 million. Launched in 2023 by entrepreneur Dale Vince, the airline had ambitious plans for flights from Edinburgh to Southampton, with future routes to mainland Europe and long-haul destinations. However, a recent petition filed at Edinburgh Sheriff Court led to the appointment of provisional liquidators, Paul Dounis and Mark Harper of Opus Restructuring. EcoJet Airlines, primarily owned by Vince’s energy company Ecotricity, has no significant assets, and the liquidation process is being funded to ensure employees receive their entitled benefits. Vince emphasized that the decision to halt investment in EcoJet was temporary, citing challenges in aligning technology and regulations for electric aviation. The company had not commenced any commercial flights, so no passengers are affected by its closure.
