A man’s body was found nearly a month after his passing in a popular vacation spot following complaints from neighbors about a strong odor.
The 79-year-old individual was discovered in a seaside residence in Puerto Andratx, Majorca on Wednesday. Firefighters accessed his balcony with a ladder and entered the property by breaking through the glass door. Concerns were raised by neighbors about a foul smell emanating from the apartment, prompting the landlord to alert authorities after unsuccessful attempts to reach the man.
A crowd gathered as emergency services gained entry to the locked apartment, confirming the presence of a deceased individual once inside.
The man, originally from Germany and a long-time resident of the area, is suspected to have died of natural causes. According to his landlord, he lived alone, consistently paid his bills on time, and the sudden lack of communication was unusual.
In a separate incident in April 2026, a British expat couple was found in a rural property in Cala Mesquida, Majorca. They were discovered after missing a scheduled boat trip, leading emergency services to find the man deceased and his wife in critical condition due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty appliance.
This unfortunate event is not an isolated case, as many elderly or solitary expatriates in the region reside in tourist areas with limited local support networks, delaying the discovery of incidents for days or weeks. Last February, two vulnerable British retirees were found deceased in their residence in San Fulgencio, a town south of Alicante known for its high concentration of UK expats in Spain.
The couple’s absence raised concerns after unanswered calls, and their bodies were eventually found by authorities following a passerby’s observation through a window. The couple, classified as “vulnerable” by local social services due to severe chronic illnesses, were confirmed to have been undiscovered for several days by forensic teams. Post-mortem examinations revealed no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and the couple’s identities were not disclosed by Spanish officials.
During the same month, a 90-year-old British retiree reportedly died from starvation in her residence after her 63-year-old son, who was her caregiver, passed away from natural causes. Police entered the property and discovered both bodies after unanswered knocks on the front door.
