“Elderly Man Hospitalized After Care Home Assault”

Date:

An elderly man was hospitalized after a severe assault by another resident at a care home. John Cain, aged 87, was attacked in a secure garden area at HammondCare’s Hammondville facility in Sydney. Disturbing hospital images show him with extensive injuries, including facial wounds and blood leaking from his ear.

Following the incident, John was discovered injured and covered in blood on the veranda of his cottage within the secure dementia unit. His daughter, Margaret, expressed shock at his condition, emphasizing that she had never seen him so badly injured before. She received a late-night call informing her of the situation and rushed to the facility.

While the family demands answers, HammondCare has initiated an investigation into the assault. Executive General Manager Jenny Summerton conveyed apologies and sadness over the incident, emphasizing that immediate police and family notifications were made. The facility specializes in caring for individuals with severe dementia-related behaviors, acknowledging the challenges involved in managing such residents.

A 69-year-old man, Geoffrey Innes, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and is under police guard at Liverpool Hospital. He was denied bail and is set to appear in court for a bedside hearing. The facility has taken steps to prevent further incidents and has informed families of other residents about the situation.
