“Families Advocate Against NHS ‘Concealment’ After Report”

Date:

Grieving families shared how they were compelled to advocate against NHS “concealment” after a significant report revealed the extensive harm inflicted on hundreds of mothers and infants. During a recent press briefing, parents revisited the harrowing experiences they faced, hoping to prevent similar tragedies. The comprehensive inquiry by leading midwife Donna Ockenden into Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust revealed that 520 mothers and babies suffered avoidable harm or death due to substandard care, marking the largest investigation of its kind in NHS history.

Approximately 2,500 families participated, with around 2,000 agreeing to provide detailed accounts that profoundly impacted their lives. Lead campaigner Jack Hawkins emphasized that they transformed from victims into advocates due to the failure of maternity staff and leaders to heed their concerns. Many families are now advocating for a thorough statutory public inquiry to address their grievances.

One such story involves senior physiotherapist Sarah Hawkins and her husband Jack, a hospital consultant, who tragically lost their daughter Harriet in 2016. Despite expressing concerns during a prolonged labor, the couple received inadequate support from the maternity unit, leading to the devastating loss of their child. The subsequent investigation revealed multiple care deficiencies, with the couple describing the subsequent cover-up as distressing and a betrayal of trust.

Another heart-wrenching account involves Gary and Sarah Andrews, who mourn the loss of their daughter Wynter in 2019 due to a series of medical errors. The Andrews criticized NUH for failing to address concerns promptly, leading to fatal consequences for their newborn. The couple expressed their disappointment with the lack of transparency and called for a national public inquiry to ensure accountability.

The report also highlighted the distressing experience of Carly Wesson and Carl Everson, who terminated their pregnancy based on incorrect information provided by healthcare professionals. The couple was devastated to discover that their unborn child was healthy, emphasizing the profound impact of misinformation on their decision-making process.

Additionally, Emmie Studencki and her partner Ryan Parker recounted a traumatic childbirth experience that resulted in the loss of their son Quinn. Inadequate medical intervention, mismanagement, and communication failures led to a series of tragic events, ultimately culminating in Quinn’s untimely death. The couple criticized NUH for its negligence and lack of accountability in addressing the systemic issues within the maternity services.

Lastly, Emily Stringer shared the heartbreaking journey of her daughter Caitlin, who suffered irreversible brain damage due to delayed treatment of a severe medical condition. Caitlin’s ongoing health challenges have placed a significant burden on the family, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and reform in maternity services.

These poignant narratives underscore the urgent call for transparency, accountability, and systemic reforms within the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
