A unique weather event is predicted to occur during the ongoing heatwave, leading to the accumulation of dirt on cars and windows. Meteorologists anticipate the occurrence of “blood rain” over the weekend, particularly affecting the South of England due to the influx of dust particles carried by the Saharan plume. This phenomenon involves the precipitation of dusty rain that will leave a hazy residue on the ground, homes, and vehicles.
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, explained that as a cold front moves in, bringing showers and thunderstorms, sand from high atmospheric levels will mix in, causing the air to become hazier. The dust from the Sahara region will be carried by the rain showers, resulting in cars being coated with sandy dust, especially in southern regions.
While uncommon in the UK, this event is occurring due to the prevailing hot weather caused by the movement of air from Europe and parts of Africa towards the country. Record-high temperatures have been observed, with Gosport, Hampshire, reaching 36C. A red weather warning has been issued, leading to the closure of numerous schools in south Wales and the Southwest of England.
The upcoming cooler temperatures are expected to bring significant rainfall, with the North of England likely to experience the heaviest downpours over the weekend. In a previous occurrence of blood rain in March, various outdoor surfaces were covered in dirt, requiring cleaning. Although the phenomenon is mainly a cosmetic issue and not harmful to health, it is distinctive for its unusual appearance.
Stav Danaos, a lead weather presenter at the BBC, highlighted the impact of Saharan dust mixing with rain, causing dirty deposits on surfaces, commonly known as blood rain. Parts of England and Wales are projected to be most affected by this week’s dust concentrations, influenced by prevailing winds and the positioning of high-pressure systems.
