“King Charles Breaks Royal Tradition: Releases Full Tax Details”

Date:

King Charles has decided to release his complete personal tax information to enhance transparency regarding royal finances. He will be the first monarch to do so by disclosing his annual tax payment details.

According to a palace source, it is the King’s explicit desire to make his tax information public for the first time, especially with the increased scrutiny on the Firm’s finances. The revealed information will encompass the total tax amount paid by Charles, including income from personal wealth, investments, and specific Capital Gains tax.

When questioned about the King’s decision to expand the palace’s financial disclosures, a Palace aide mentioned that Charles believed it was the appropriate action to take. The aide expressed Charles’s hope that this move will significantly aid the public in understanding the mechanics of the Sovereign Grant, the Duchy of Lancaster (the monarch’s estate), and his private sources of income.

The King’s private funds consist of earnings from investments, trading profits, revenues from his private estates like Balmoral and Sandringham, and personal savings. The Duchy of Lancaster estate, a private collection of land, investments, and various properties, provides Charles with an annual income, which amounted to £26.8 million in 2024/2025. Charles voluntarily pays the top UK income tax rate (45%) for income received from the Duchy of Lancaster.

Originally established to provide the reigning monarch with an independent income source, historically termed the Privy Purse, the Duchy of Lancaster was used for official and personal expenses, including expenses for other members of the Royal Family.

Today, the King’s complete personal tax details for the 2024-25 financial year will be made public, along with other reports on royal finances. However, his tax information for the 2025-26 period will be disclosed next year after completion of the audit.

The announcement of Charles’s tax disclosure came last week, with Buckingham Palace emphasizing the extensive details provided in the annual Sovereign Grant Report, subject to government oversight, parliamentary scrutiny, media evaluation, and public review. The Palace aims to enhance transparency further by introducing additional measures to improve public understanding of royal finances.

Charles has a history of releasing his tax information, having done so during his time as the Prince of Wales and overseeing the Duchy of Cornwall, which has now passed to Prince William.
