Barry and Eddie Hearn have exceeded the £1 billion milestone with their successful sports media business. The duo, consisting of father Barry and son Eddie, are the owners of Matchroom Sports, a company involved in boxing, snooker, and darts.
Barry’s journey in snooker began in the 1970s when he represented renowned six-time world champion Steve Davis. In 1982, the 77-year-old established Matchroom, which has been further developed by his 46-year-old son Eddie, who has gained fame in the boxing world.
Matchroom has managed notable athletes such as Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Sr, and Lennox Lewis, but is most recognized for its association with Anthony Joshua. Barry also serves as the chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation and has played a significant role in the resurgence of darts’ popularity, as well as the acquisition of the World Snooker Tour in 2010.
Their business success has positioned them as the third wealthiest individuals in UK sports according to The Sunday Times rich list, boasting a combined net worth of £1.035 billion. They trail only behind F1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone (£2bn) and David and Victoria Beckham (£1.185bn).
In the rich list ranking, they surpass F1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton, who holds the fifth position with £435 million, and golfer Rory McIlroy in seventh place with £325 million.
Anthony Joshua, Matchroom’s standout client, secures the eighth spot with an estimated wealth of £240 million, ahead of Tyson Fury in ninth with £162 million. England captain Harry Kane and tennis legend Sir Andy Murray share the tenth position with £110 million each.
While Barry initiated the Matchroom empire, Eddie has played a pivotal role in its expansion. In a reflective piece for the Big Issue in 2020, Eddie attributed his drive and work ethic to being his father’s son, aiming to surpass his father’s achievements and build upon the family legacy.
