A tragedy unfolded in the waters of the southern Philippines as a ferry with over 350 passengers onboard sank, resulting in the loss of at least 15 lives, as confirmed by authorities.
The vessel, named M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, which served as both a cargo and passenger ferry, was en route from Zamboanga to Jolo island when it ran into technical issues and tragically sank after midnight. The incident occurred about a nautical mile away from Baluk-baluk village in Basilan province, amidst favorable weather conditions.
Following a distress call made at 1:50 local time on Monday, rescue efforts were swiftly mobilized after a coast guard safety officer on board alerted authorities. Fortunately, the safety officer survived the ordeal.
Rescue operations managed to save 316 passengers, while heartbreaking stories emerged from survivors like Mohamad Khan, who recounted the harrowing moment when the ferry suddenly tilted, causing chaos and leading to the loss of lives, including Khan’s 6-month-old baby.
Search and rescue missions, involving coast guard, navy ships, surveillance aircraft, and fishing vessels, were actively combing the area off Basilan to locate any remaining passengers. Governor Mujiv Hataman reported receiving 37 survivors at the pier, with the unfortunate news of two fatalities.
As investigations into the cause of the tragedy begin, initial reports suggest no indications of overloading or safety issues prior to the ferry’s departure from Zamboanga. The authorities remain committed to uncovering the circumstances that led to this devastating maritime incident.
