Britons planning a trip to one of the largest theme parks globally have been cautioned following a measles-infected individual spending 11 hours there. Health authorities in Los Angeles issued an urgent alert after confirming the virus carrier visited Universal Studios, Hollywood, on July 26, from 10 am to 9 pm. The identity of the infected person remains undisclosed, but they were contagious during their entire visit, potentially exposing thousands of park visitors.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials are actively tracing and notifying individuals who may have had contact with the infected visitor. Universal Studios Hollywood, a popular destination attracting approximately 9.6 million visitors annually, equivalent to around 26,000 people daily, is a favored spot for British tourists.
Measles, known as one of the most contagious diseases globally, can infect up to nine out of 10 unvaccinated individuals exposed to it. The virus spreads through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, remaining airborne for up to two hours after the carrier’s departure.
Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of visitors ensuring they are fully vaccinated against measles, especially during the summer travel season when exposure risks may rise. The MMR vaccine, the most effective defense against measles, mumps, and rubella, reduces the chances of measles infection by approximately 97% after two doses.
Early symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinctive red rash that typically starts on the face and spreads over the body days later. The virus can cause severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations like infants, pregnant women, individuals with weakened immune systems, and the unvaccinated, leading to conditions such as pneumonia, brain inflammation, hospitalization, and in rare cases, death.
Those who exhibit symptoms after visiting the theme park are advised to stay home, avoid public places, and contact a healthcare provider by phone before seeking medical care to prevent spreading the infection.
