“First Black Mayor of Haverfordwest Hires Private Security Amid Racist Threats”

Date:

The inaugural Black mayor of the popular town of Haverfordwest has enlisted private security guards after receiving racist threats related to his position.

Randell Thomas-Turner, 37, achieved a significant milestone in May by becoming the first Black mayor elected in the town of Pembrokeshire, which boasts approximately 14,500 residents. He expressed that his election symbolized the progress of the community.

Subsequently, the mayor took steps to secure private security for the town’s traditional Beating of the Bounds ceremony due to concerns for his personal safety. In a statement, Cllr Thomas-Turner emphasized the town council’s zero-tolerance policy towards racism, discrimination, harassment, or any form of threatening behavior. He clarified that any issues involving individual councilors were being managed by the relevant authorities and reiterated his dedication to serving the town with pride and commitment.

During the historic civic event, where a water procession asserts the town’s fishery rights rooted in medieval traditions, there was noticeable security accompanying the mayor, prompting inquiries.

The council verified that the mayor independently arranged and financed the security measures and clarified that the decision was a precautionary measure. The presence of security was not indicative of a specific threat to the event, participants, or the public, ensuring that the ceremony proceeded smoothly and remained a safe and family-friendly affair.

In another statement, the council strongly denounced all forms of abuse, intimidation, and threatening conduct towards community servants, emphasizing the importance of respectful public discourse in local democracy.

Cllr Thomas-Turner, also recognized as the youngest mayor in a century in Haverfordwest, expressed his honor at the appointment and articulated his aspiration to contribute to a future characterized by unity, opportunity, compassion, and community spirit.

County councillor Michael Williams condemned the situation as “appalling but sadly not surprising,” highlighting the increasing boldness of some individuals in publicly expressing racist sentiments. He condemned the reported incidents as disgraceful and called for accountability from those involved.
