“Former Birmingham Shopping Center Demolished Amid Safety Concerns”

Date:

Demolition has commenced on a former shopping center in Birmingham, where 30 businesses were abruptly instructed to halt operations with only an hour’s notice. Priory Square, which previously accommodated various establishments including hair salons, B&M, eateries, and the renowned Oasis Market, saw all its occupants vacate indefinitely in March 2025.

The closure, enforced by property company Hammerson, was prompted by safety concerns following a fire risk assessment that revealed significant electrical infrastructure issues necessitating substantial remedial actions. Hammerson has officially confirmed the ongoing demolition activities at the site, with workers in high-visibility clothing and construction machinery now visible on the premises.

A spokesperson for Hammerson stated that since the closure of Priory Square, demolition has commenced, with ongoing discussions with Birmingham City Council regarding future plans for the area. Priory Square, once a vital hub in the neighborhood, particularly known for housing the longstanding Oasis Market, a cornerstone of Birmingham’s alternative scene, closed its doors after 54 years of operation due to safety hazards.

Hammerson had determined that the required enhancements to the building’s electrical system were impractical to implement, necessitating a prolonged period of vacancy for upgrades before any potential reopening. Consequently, the decision was made to keep the shopping center closed indefinitely to address the safety concerns effectively.
