“Gen Z Prefers Uber Over Car Ownership: Study”

Date:

Instead of opting for a Ford Fiesta as their first car, Generation Z individuals are showing a preference for booking Uber rides. A recent study revealed that half of young Brits have no intention of learning to drive and believe they can lead a fulfilling life without car ownership. The notion of passing a driving test for freedom and independence seems to be fading among today’s twenty-somethings.

The importance of driving is diminishing according to a significant 77% of respondents, with 71% stating that it is no longer a significant milestone as it once was. Fear of driving is a deterrent for 29% of youngsters, while high fuel prices discourage 25% of them.

Within urban Gen Z populations, 68% feel that owning a car is no longer a crucial life goal, with 79% preferring to allocate their funds towards travel, dining out, or dating activities. Instead of investing in a used car, they are opting for ride-shares, e-bikes, and public transportation.

London leads the UK in the trend of car-free living, with 61% of adults in the city not driving, surpassing Liverpool and Plymouth. Over half of the respondents believe that owning a car in a city is unnecessary due to the availability of public transport, cycling options, and ride-hailing services.

Financial concerns play a significant role in the decision to forego car ownership, with 35% considering cars to be a financial burden, 33% citing affordability issues, and 31% deeming driving lessons and insurance costs as too high. Environmental consciousness is also a driving factor.

An overwhelming majority of Gen Z individuals, at 87%, prioritize environmental considerations in their transportation choices, a sentiment much stronger than in older age groups. Additionally, 70% actively choose electric or low-emission taxis whenever possible, and almost two-thirds of aspiring drivers express a preference for learning in an electric vehicle.

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is leading the shift towards greener modes of transport, as highlighted by a recent poll commissioned by energy firm Hive during London Climate Action Week. Tom Pakenham, Commercial Director for Hive, expressed optimism about the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and sustainable travel options, emphasizing the importance of supporting this transition with EV charging solutions and smarter energy practices.
