An update has been provided regarding the reopening of Scotland’s busiest train station, and it appears that commuters nationwide may face ongoing challenges. Glasgow Central railway station was shut down following a destructive fire that originated at a vape shop on Sunday afternoon. The fire swiftly spread to adjacent shops and eventually reached the train station, causing a section of the building to collapse.
ScotRail swiftly announced the suspension of train services on Monday morning, posing a significant hurdle for commuters during Glasgow’s rush hour with limited alternative transport options. The closure of Glasgow Central has now been extended to Tuesday, with disruptions expected to persist for several more days. ScotRail confirmed that services to and from Glasgow Central High Level will be halted on Tuesday, while trains operating via Glasgow Central Low Level will bypass the station.
Passengers are advised to utilize Argyle Street or Anderston Station for their travel needs and to check for route changes, as many routes in the west of Scotland are either suspended or altered due to the fire incident. ScotRail is keeping customers informed through its website, app, and social media platforms, providing updates on affected routes and instructions on claiming ticket refunds. Station personnel are available across the network to assist where possible.
Emergency services and Network Rail are assessing the aftermath of the fire, while ScotRail will share further updates on service resumptions as information becomes available. ScotRail’s chief operating officer, David Ross, expressed regret over the disruptions caused by the closure and praised the efforts of emergency services in containing the blaze. Crews are working to cool hotspots within the building’s stonework, and structural engineers are evaluating the remaining structure’s stability in collaboration with the fire service.
As of Monday afternoon, eight fire appliances, including high-reach vehicles, remained on-site. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and a comprehensive investigation will be carried out once conditions permit. Due to the significant damage and debris present, Glasgow Central Station will remain closed until further notice.
