“Winter Returns: Snow Forecast for UK from Friday”

Date:

The Met Office has issued a forecast predicting snowfall in areas as low as 200 meters in the upcoming days. According to the weather agency, snow is expected to blanket various parts of the country, including the Northwest of England, starting from Friday. This forecast marks a significant shift from the warm weather experienced last week, with temperatures reaching as high as 19C in Greater London.

Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth from the Met Office mentioned in a video update that a noticeable change in the air mass is expected by the end of the week. Colder conditions are anticipated, with the likelihood of frost in sheltered regions on Friday due to strong winds. Rain moving in from the north and west will bring showers, some of which may turn into snow at around 200 meters above sea level, accompanied by hail and a risk of ice on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Weather maps from the Met Office depict a wintry outlook for Friday, showing white hues indicating snow across regions like the Northwest of England, north Wales, and parts of Scotland, while a blue hue covers areas like the Southwest of England. Temperatures, which soared above 15C in Goudhurst, Kent on Sunday, are set to plummet in the coming days. Friday is expected to feel as cold as -7C, with a persistent westerly wind making it feel even colder, a pattern that will continue through the weekend.

Ms. Shuttleworth emphasized that chilly conditions will be widespread, with temperatures remaining in single digits during the day, and the weather pattern staying unsettled over the weekend. Following the snow, rainy conditions are predicted, particularly in the Northwest of England, with heavy rain forecast for Thursday across the Northeast of England in the morning and most of Wales in the afternoon.

Ahead of the inclement weather, 21 flood warnings have been issued, mainly for waterways in the Southwest of England, including Groundwater flooding alerts for areas like Hooke in West Dorset and the Till in Wiltshire.
