Greek man defies terminal cancer, lives 40+ years

Date:

A man who was initially diagnosed with terminal lung cancer was given only a few months to live. However, he defied the odds and lived for over four decades by returning to his remote Greek birthplace.

Stamatis Moraitis, in his mid-60s, received the devastating news from doctors in the U.S. that his lung tumors were untreatable, with less than a year left to live. Despite the grim prognosis, Moraitis chose to go back to the Aegean island of Ikaria, renowned for its long-living residents.

Remarkably, Moraitis experienced a significant improvement in his health on the island. Engaging in physical labor, tending to crops, and enjoying the company of friends helped his recovery. After years, he revisited the U.S. to seek answers from doctors, only to find they had all passed away.

His revitalization was attributed to Ikaria’s laid-back lifestyle, focusing on natural waking, daily napping, and social interactions. A World War II veteran who moved to the U.S. in the 1940s, Moraitis led a strenuous life until he embraced the island’s relaxed pace.

Speaking with longevity expert Dan Buettner, Moraitis credited his survival to the island’s stress-free environment. Buettner described Moraitis as the standout individual in his study, highlighting the transformative impact of changing surroundings.

Buettner emphasized that Moraitis’s recovery was not a miraculous cure but a shift in lifestyle. The culture of seeking comfort, according to Buettner, contrasts with Ikaria’s emphasis on activity and social connections, which promote well-being.

Studies reveal that Ikaria residents have a higher likelihood of reaching 90 compared to Americans, with delayed onset of cancer and heart disease. Their plant-based diet, daily uphill walks, and strong community ties contribute to their longevity.

Moraitis’s ability to outlive his terminal prognosis by more than four decades exemplifies the Ikarian lifestyle. When asked about beating cancer, his humble response remained straightforward: “It just went away.”
