An Iranian nuclear facility has caught fire following an attack, as reported by the nation’s media sources. The Khondab Heavy Water Complex, a segment of the Arak Nuclear Complex, was struck twice today, according to the Fars news agency. Witnesses on Iranian Telegram channels stated that the complex sustained approximately 10 hits.
State media has assured that precautionary safety measures have been enacted, ensuring that there is currently no threat of radiation exposure to the local populace. Two projectiles struck the facility, while others were intercepted by air defense systems. Observers noted black smoke rising from the nuclear complex, indicating the fire that broke out around 6 pm local time.
The Israeli Defense Forces issued a statement in Persian prior to the incident, cautioning the public about impending strikes on military infrastructure in Arak. The warning specified areas to be targeted, emphasizing the necessity for immediate evacuation to ensure safety.
Subsequently, the Israeli army initiated extensive airstrikes in Iran on multiple fronts simultaneously, targeting the military infrastructure of the Iranian regime. The Khondab Heavy Water Complex, known as IR-40, is an Iranian heavy water reactor situated in Arak, which was decommissioned in 2015. Originally intended to commence nuclear operations in 2014, the facility was previously targeted by Israeli missiles in 2025 to prevent its restoration for nuclear purposes.
Following the incident, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the reactor was hit and no longer contained any nuclear material.
