A courageous individual who was a victim of the notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein has recently spoken out about the harrowing experience of being sexually assaulted by him starting at the young age of 14.
Marina Lacerda, originally from Brazil, came to the United States at the age of eight and took on multiple jobs during high school to help her family financially. When she was introduced to Epstein, she was going through a challenging time due to her stepfather being imprisoned for abusing young girls and having a strained relationship with her mother.
An acquaintance informed Marina that she could earn $300 (£220) for a 30-minute massage session, which she saw as an opportunity to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina or Broadway performer. However, her vulnerability, economic struggles, and naivety led her into a four-year ordeal of abuse by Epstein.
Referred to as “Minor-Victim 1” in Epstein’s 2019 indictment, Marina, now 37, played a crucial role in bringing charges against the predator. Despite Epstein’s subsequent death in a New York prison, denying justice to his victims, Marina bravely shared her story of being groomed by him.
She described how the process of manipulation unfolded gradually after she was recruited as a masseuse. Marina recounted feeling coerced into removing her shirt before her first massage session, rationalizing the situation to herself under false pretenses of normalcy.
Epstein’s manipulative tactics extended to using Marina as a tool to instruct other girls on how to behave, treating her as a mere puppet. Despite not resorting to physical violence, Epstein’s psychological hold on his victims was strong, compelling them to comply with his demands.
As Marina became entangled in Epstein’s web, she was coerced into recruiting other young girls, with Epstein specifying his preference for teens with student IDs. As she matured and distanced herself from Epstein’s influence, Marina eventually found independence by working at a coffee shop.
In light of ongoing revelations surrounding Epstein’s crimes, Marina emphasized the importance of recognizing survivors as the children they were when the abuse occurred, urging authorities to empathize with their plight. She highlighted the need to view the victims through a lens of compassion and understanding, considering the lasting impacts of their traumatic experiences.
