Israeli Forces Advance into Lebanon, Breaking Ceasefire

Date:

Israeli forces have advanced further into Lebanon than they have in the past 26 years, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s orders to attack Beirut, breaking a fragile ceasefire. This escalation has raised concerns about a potential humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the resumption of US missile strikes on Iranian military targets and Tehran’s attacks on neighboring countries. The breach of Beirut’s shaky ceasefire has cast doubts on the prospects of peace in the Middle East, with peace negotiations hinging on ending the war in Lebanon, as stated by Tehran.

Expectations are high for large-scale bombing campaigns targeting Hezbollah strongholds in south Beirut in the upcoming days, causing thousands of refugees to flee their homes, intensifying an already dire situation. The primary target of the Israeli offensive is believed to be the Beirut suburb of Daraya, one of three key Hezbollah enclaves in Lebanon. Over 1.2 million Lebanese individuals are now registered as refugees, having escaped the conflict in the south, with no signs of peace between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

In the latest offensive, Hezbollah has launched rockets at northern Israel, specifically targeting the city of Haifa. Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon overnight resulted in six fatalities, including a Syrian national in a village close to Nabatiyeh. The Israeli military reported intercepting two projectiles fired from Lebanon towards Israel, while Iran’s foreign minister emphasized the necessity of a ceasefire in Lebanon as a crucial precondition for any peace agreement.

The two ongoing conflict zones are closely intertwined, according to Iran’s stipulations, with negotiations ongoing to resolve the conflict between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear aspirations. Israeli troops have seized the symbolic Crusader Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, surpassing the previous boundary of the Litani River, sparking concerns of a potential Israeli occupation of significant portions of southern Lebanon. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of implementing a “scorched-earth policy and collective punishment” in the southern region, while President Donald Trump dismissed critics and expressed optimism about reaching a favorable deal with Iran.

Amid escalating tensions, air attacks between the US and Iran resumed over the weekend, with American forces targeting Iranian missile teams. Kuwait faced threats from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, activating sirens and deploying air defenses against incoming missiles. The IRGC also claimed responsibility for firing at a possible US military facility located within Kuwait.

Previously, the US and Iran appeared to be making progress towards a preliminary agreement to halt hostilities, focusing on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US blockade to allow discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and US sanctions. While Tehran insists on including its Hezbollah proxies in Lebanon in any long-term peace accord, Israel advocates for their exclusion.
